Within the framework of the “Multilingualism Festival” organized next June in cooperation with the Municipal Company of Information, Spectacle and Communication, the Municipality of Thessaloniki has created a Workgroup “for the coordination of local programs as well as cultural and intercultural actions on educational multilingual issues”. The purpose of this organization which takes place under the supervision of the Alderman of Education and Lifelong Learning, Antonis Karoubis, is to become a festival – crossroad among languages and cultures, in a public open space, in the city center or in symbolic locations, creating a sense of the Market and communication with the passers-by.
Based on the historic quest of the multilingual landscape of Thessaloniki, cultural and educational communities, foreign institutes and societies, as well as specialized speakers, will present and talk about the languages and cultures of their countries. They will also invite citizens and children to discover and get acquainted with the sounds, the letters, the writing of these languages and the cultural history that accompanies them.
The “Multilingual Festival” will basically invite the young and the older to discover the diversity and the cultural richness of languages by participating in workshops, activities, friendly and spontaneous conversations and round tables with native speakers of every language, says the Alderman of Education and Lifelong Learning, Antonis Karoubis
The scientific responsible for the project, Argyro Moumtzidou, adds that: “The basic purpose of this festival is to contribute so the small crossroads of cultures that will be created, will regenerate our knowledge with the different and the non familiar language sound, with other people’s different culture. To feel that languages do not separate people but bring them closer”.
